My friend said it best, “It’s ridiculous!”
He was referring to a misunderstanding I had with a friend which really started from a wrong assumption. “Maling akala.” Unfortunately, the Filipino saying, “madaming namamatay sa malaking akala” is true. Assumptions are the termites of a relationship, someone else once said, and I wonder, “why do people even resort to assumptions when they can simply ask?”
I was thinking about this and talking it over with my good friend Meryll, and then it just hit me. Everyone seems to tell me the same thing, that this is ridiculous, almost to the point of being tragically comic or comically tragic, whichever perspective you wanna look at it, but the truth of the matter is, there’s no end point to this. While it seems very obvious that the person who started this wrong assumption really, really got it wrong to the highest degree, what of that? Who wins? Who loses? Only a friendship suffers, and in the end, it’s not anymore about who caused the friendship to fall or not. It’s about how it even got to this point when it all started as a ridiculous, tragic, wrong assumption!
Marilyn Monroe once said, “we let the most foolish things tear us apart.” Yes, we do.
But you know what? I’m not going to change anything anymore, because the fact is, I can live with it –the stupidity of all these. It happens. People make stupid mistakes and worse, people react to it stupidly. I can live with that. Maybe soon enough that person will just realize how he has made a ridicule of this friendship, but even then, I won’t hold my breath. It’s already here, this stupid conclusion. A friendship was destroyed and it was for something very, very foolish. So foolishness, you win!
I don’t want to assume, so I’d rather ask. What was the misunderstanding all about ?
Thanks for being curious. Unfortunately, I’m not about to spill it online. Thanks, though :-)
